ROAD TEST: MEN’S SPORT DEODORANTS

Deodorant test

There’s a bunch of men’s deodorants out there, but which ones are actually up for the task? To find out, beauty director Sarah Brooks-Wilson forced her husband to workout, then test the leading deodorants to see if they really work. Here are his top picks.

Dry_Impact_Men-AerosolNivea Men Dry Impact Plus 48h
Best for: Long, intense workouts
A good all rounder even if you sweat a lot. While some men’s deodorants have that pungent ‘extreme man smell’, this one had just enough without it being overpowering. As it’s in a huge container, it’s better for your home base, than on the go. But in terms of confidence, it really is the ultimate sweat blanket, and can be trusted to do the job. Where you can buy it: Woolworths, $6.59

Lynx Africa

Lynx Africa Dry Anti-Perspirant Roll on
Best for: Travellers and gym junkies
This anti-perspirant is lightweight, compact and packs a punch. It has a subtle masculine scent that isn’t too sweet or musky. It’s best feature is that it’s compact – perfect for those work trips and easy to throw into your gym bag, and, because it’s such a bargain, you can afford to have a few spares at work, in your gym bag and at home. Where you can buy it: Chemist Warehouse, $3.39

Cedrat-DeodorantLOW-RES
L’Occitane En Provence Cedrat Stick Deodorant
Best for: Moments when you want to impress
While this stick may look ‘sticky’, it’s actually drier than a roll on.
It has a zesty, energising lemon scent, and dries quickly on your skin. Not sure how it would cope in 40-degree heat as I put to the test during the cooler months, but if you’re after a bit of luxury to take on a romantic weekend away, slip this into your bag. Yes, it’s pretty spenny, but it’s worth the investment as it’ll last for a while. Where you can buy it: L’Occitane, $27

Adidas Fresh Cool & Dry 48h Anti-perspirantCool-+-Dry-Fresh-Spray-MaleLOW-RES
Best for: Before work exercise and adventure sports
Action heroes will love this workhorse. It’s hardworking, keeps you dry and while the promise of ‘not leaving white marks on any fabric’ peaked my skepticism, surprisingly it stayed invisible after wearing a dark shirt all day. I even put it to the test on a 120km-cycle race and it came up trumps, so it’s a pretty solid choice for an all-rounder. Where you can buy it: Priceline, $6.29

KLIM DeodorantKLIM Anti-Perspirant Deodorant
Best for: Weekend hikes and carry-on luggage
The watery mist that came out of this simple pump spray kept me dry
all day. The fragrance was light and fresh, so it didn’t compete with my aftershave, and the fact that it’s aluminum-free (and contains Aloe Vera),  means that it’s better for my skin. It’s also unisex so you could share it. Where you can buy it: Milk and Co, $9.95
