Hidden under the weight of Sydney’s financial district, CREW is a pocket gym that offers an intense, fast-paced workout based around rowing. And it’s causing waves (sorry for the pun), because it’s the first of its kind in Sydney.
During the classes you’ll use a mix of rowing machines, hand weights and mat work, but its the rowing sprints that will keep your heart rate up. And even though the workout is designed for a range of different fitness levels, the sprints will definitely bring out your competitive nature. Don’t fight it. It’s inevitable. On our first class we came in last in every sprint, but that didn’t stop us from trying harder each time. And you’ll definitely want to see your name on the CREW record board with the uber fitties… one day.
The small CBD studio was set up by Mike Aldridge, who has spent time in some of New York’s finest boutique gyms and, quite frankly, he’s nothing short of a legend. He’s got a massive smile and even after a day of encouraging tired officer workers to sweat, he still manages to be upbeat. A job he does well. He’ll make you laugh when every muscle in your body just wants to go home and eat ice cream.
Despite the nature of the workouts (hello, sweat central), the classes tend to be slightly more female than male dominated; a fact that Mike puts down to women being ‘early adopters’ with new fitness classes. “Generally, it just takes time for guys to try something new,” says Mike. “But we do have a lot of guys who are regulars and who come every week.”
The idea for CREW came from the lack of intense short workouts in the CBD. “I was looking to offer something to people who want to run out of their office at lunchtime, do a class and return before their boss even notices,” says (legend) Mike. That’s part of the reason the classes are only 30-45 minutes. Short and sweet. You can get a great workout and not waste too much time doing it.
There are lockers available for free and nice new fitness equipment, including snazzy new rowing machines (with water-filled flywheels that make a satisfying ‘whoosh’ sound), but take note there are no facilities for showers and only one bathroom. So keep that in mind if you want to do a class before your next Tinder date. Maybe bring your date to the class and be sweaty together?
So, basically, if you’re after a fast-paced, intense class with a full-body workout, that will make your muscles sore (then happy the next day), we can’t recommend CREW high enough.
